In this week's Wellness Wednesday episode Evan has the pleasure of welcoming on Jeremy Silva who's the founder of BuildASoil. BuildASoil was founded 10 years ago out of a genuine interest in gardening and a desire to help other gardeners and farmers around the country. Jeremy has grown his knowledge on all things soil and regenerative/sustainable forms of farming. In this podcast episode, Evan and Jeremy speak about:
- Why soils are so depleted
- What are the best ways to replenish soil
- Why healthy soil is so important
- Why food is less nutrient dense today than it was 100 years ago
- How you can grow your own food even with limited space
- What the future of farming looks like
Our bodies are an expression of our external environments, and as we've witnessed our air become polluted, our soils depleted, and our waters contaminated, we too have seen our bodies react accordingly. Asthma and other lung related health concerns are on the rise, our bodies are lacking in vitamins and minerals, and our bodies have higher levels of contaminants than they have ever had. By taking care of our soils, we will be directly taking care of ourselves and the health of our bodies. The information in this episode is relevant for everyone and we need to be tackling these problems as a collective.
Do everything with good intentions and connect with your elements.

Hey, what's going on, everybody.
Speaker:Welcome back to the elemental Evan show.
Speaker:Thank you all so much for tuning in today on this beautiful wellness Wednesday.
Speaker:Or whatever day of the week you are tuning in.
Speaker:However, all of these episodes are being released on Wednesdays, which is a little
Speaker:bit of a change up from what I was doing.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:I was producing two episodes a week, Mondays and Wednesdays.
Speaker:And for those of you who are avid listeners to this show, you will
Speaker:definitely notice that there are no longer any Monday episodes.
Speaker:And the only reason for this is, is because a life gets super busy.
Speaker:As many of you already know.
Speaker:And for me to put my all into these episodes, I decided to turn it
Speaker:back to just one episode a week and really make those episodes awesome.
Speaker:So I have a lot of guest interviews.
Speaker:That I've been, uh, sorry, conducting here recently.
Speaker:Uh, which obviously is also going to be in this episode,
Speaker:we have a very special guest.
Speaker:His name is Jeremy Silva and he is the founder of build a soil.
Speaker:So we will go ahead and have the interview with him in just a moment.
Speaker:But I wanted to touch on a few little things about this episode
Speaker:before we get into the interview.
Speaker:So as I stated, Jeremy Silva is the founder of build a soil, which was founded
Speaker:about a decade ago now and his whole goal.
Speaker:Goal is simply to empower organic growers and provide them with high
Speaker:quality products and free education.
Speaker:This guy is very well knowledged in all things, soil and, you know, organic
Speaker:produce, uh, biodynamic, regenerative, agriculture, all the good stuff
Speaker:in terms of growing high quality, whole foods that we can consume and
Speaker:sustain over a long period of time.
Speaker:Because I do not know if any of you have heard this before,
Speaker:but there is an estimate.
Speaker:That we are basically at a point where we only have 60 harvests left given the.
Speaker:Quality of our soil, essentially.
Speaker:And because we are monocropping and depleting our soils and not giving them
Speaker:the opportunity to regenerate, uh, all of the minerals that are necessary to
Speaker:grow the plants on them and giving them a moment to rest and providing cover crops
Speaker:and, uh, you know, allowing good compost to be added there and allowing, you know,
Speaker:mother nature essentially to take course.
Speaker:Uh, we have really depleted our soils and hurt them quite badly.
Speaker:So today we are going to really dive deep with Jeremy on, you know, what is good
Speaker:quality soil, uh, why it's important, how it plays a role in our health,
Speaker:which obviously is what this whole podcast is about, is about our health.
Speaker:And our health is directly related to, you know, the food and the soil.
Speaker:Uh, that we are consuming and growing our produce on.
Speaker:So without healthy and good quality soil.
Speaker:You know, it's very hard to have good, healthy, uh, bodies as well.
Speaker:So it is a very important thing and something that we should all be concerned
Speaker:about, especially regarding going into the future and having a sustainable lifestyle.
Speaker:Uh, and also just being able to have produce that has high vitamin
Speaker:and mineral content, right.
Speaker:Because what's happening right now is our plants being that
Speaker:we are monocropping them.
Speaker:They are.
Speaker:Really becoming deficient in these, you know, minerals and vitamins
Speaker:that we so desperately need.
Speaker:And that's why they say when you eat an apple today, as opposed to a
Speaker:hundred years ago, the mineral and vitamin level is much, much lower.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:What the goal is, is we need to replenish our soils and build a new
Speaker:relationship with the way we interact with our planet and the way we
Speaker:grow our food to really also have a better relationship with our bodies.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Cause we're all interconnected here.
Speaker:And so that is really what we are going to dive into today.
Speaker:Jeremy, like I said, is very knowledgeable and we'll share some really interesting
Speaker:information in this podcast episode.
Speaker:I loved having this conversation with him and I can't wait to have him back on.
Speaker:And one last topic that I wanted to talk about is, uh, we, in this episode, speak
Speaker:a little bit about, you know, growing a little bit of food at your house.
Speaker:Even if all you have is a little patio space and.
Speaker:I cannot stress this enough that, you know, obviously there's so many aspects
Speaker:to health, but one of the biggest things you can do is really try to eat local.
Speaker:And obviously one of the most local foods that you can eat is off of
Speaker:your land or off of your patio in a small grow bed, you know?
Speaker:Uh, this is going to be the.
Speaker:Highest content of minerals and vitamins that you're going to find, you know,
Speaker:especially in any of the stores.
Speaker:Now, obviously the farmer's markets around you are probably going
Speaker:to be, uh, quite good as well.
Speaker:The produce there is going to be local.
Speaker:It's going to have probably a higher mineral content.
Speaker:And also it's just better for the planet because less travel time.
Speaker:Uh, but if you can grow something yourself, it is such a beautiful
Speaker:experience to grow something.
Speaker:And to see it as, you know, start from a seed and grow all the way into
Speaker:this beautiful plant that provides, uh, such nourishing food to you.
Speaker:And like I said, it's going to be way more nutrient dense than pretty much
Speaker:anything you're going to find at the grocery store, which is very important.
Speaker:We are.
Speaker:You know, becoming very mineral deficient.
Speaker:One of the highest mineral deficiencies that we have is in magnesium and this
Speaker:plays a massive role in our bodies.
Speaker:It conducts over 300 different processes in the body.
Speaker:Uh, so if you are not getting enough magnesium, there are a lot of processes
Speaker:in your body that is not working properly.
Speaker:So we definitely need to make sure we are getting proper mineral content in.
Speaker:And what I like to do is if I can't grow something myself and I can't get
Speaker:it from a farmer's market, I'll be, so I'll try to get it organic as well,
Speaker:but to kind of fill in those gaps.
Speaker:What I also do is I do take spirulina and chlorella because it is so high
Speaker:in minerals and vitamins actually has over 40 different minerals and
Speaker:vitamins in the spirulina and chlorella.
Speaker:So it is a tiny little tablet.
Speaker:You can take a few of them a day and they're just going to
Speaker:kind of help fill in those gaps.
Speaker:And this is on top of me already eating a very whole food diet.
Speaker:So that's the first place to start obviously is move away from the
Speaker:processed foods, get to the whole foods.
Speaker:So then you can have at least more mineral and nutrient dense foods.
Speaker:And then on top of that, if you are obviously not able to, you know, 100%
Speaker:have a garden at your house that, you know, that's all you E N wild game.
Speaker:Living like completely off of the land, which obviously a lot of us can't.
Speaker:Then the next best thing I would say is to try to find something.
Speaker:And I like to do a whole food, which is obviously spirulina and
Speaker:chlorella because they are an algae.
Speaker:They are not a supplement.
Speaker:They are an actual food and they are just extremely nutrient dense
Speaker:with, like I said, over 40 plus of vitamins and minerals in them.
Speaker:So, what I like to do is take a few of those every single day.
Speaker:And my favorite brand is energy bits.
Speaker:They are an awesome company.
Speaker:I've had the founder, Katherine on the show, please go listen to that episode.
Speaker:It's incredible.
Speaker:She said her some really, really incredible information on there.
Speaker:And yeah, it is truly one of the highest quality spirulina and chlorella companies
Speaker:that I've found through my years.
Speaker:Of research.
Speaker:Uh, so I highly, highly recommend them.
Speaker:Uh, they're a great product to take every single day.
Speaker:And they do some incredible stuff in the body, which I can't get
Speaker:into on this episode or else it'll take up the entire episode.
Speaker:So just go listen to.
Speaker:Uh, the recording I did with Catherine Arnstein and, uh, you can hear all the
Speaker:good stuff about spirulina and chlorella.
Speaker:And yeah, that is going to do it for today in terms of this introduction.
Speaker:Uh, so without further ado, let us welcome on Jeremy Silva and enjoy the show.
