This question can be answered in a few different ways depending on specific factors however, Evan breaks down why he believes that it's not social media that is necessarily what's bad, but rather the way we use social media that makes it bad or good.
If you've struggled with wasting time on social media, comparing yourself to others, or feeling angry or triggered on social media then this is the perfect episode for you. In this episode Evan walks you through his tips and tricks for using social media as a tool for growth, knowledge, and connection. This topic is extremely relevant being that social media is widely used all over the world yet, we lack the knowledge and tools to use it correctly. This improper use has manifested in many forms of mental illnesses. As mental health continues to grow in importance, it's our duty to ensure that we are taking the correct measures to improve mental health around the world.

on, everybody.
Speaker:Welcome back to the elemental Ivan show.
Speaker:Thank you all so much for tuning in on this mini Monday episode.
Speaker:I really loved these little mini episodes as I can just try to give
Speaker:you a nice little drop size piece of information in a short amount of time.
Speaker:And today's episode is a really, really important one that a lot
Speaker:of people are struggling with.
Speaker:Even myself.
Speaker:I see myself struggling with this and that is simply just with social
Speaker:media and our improper uses of it.
Speaker:So I.
Speaker:I am absolutely excited to talk about this.
Speaker:I think I have some really good information to share with all of you
Speaker:that will be beneficial for not only yourselves, but also those around you.
Speaker:Uh, before we jump into today's episode, though, I wanted to take a moment and just
Speaker:mentioned that obviously the seasons are changing here in the Northern hemisphere.
Speaker:It is getting colder and there are tons of people who are coming
Speaker:down with the flu or whatever type of virus they might be getting.
Speaker:And it is definitely a time where we need to really ensure that our
Speaker:immune systems are completely beefed up and bolstered and ready to go,
Speaker:which is why I am doubling down on my Organifi green juices in the morning.
Speaker:Uh, so obviously if you listen to the show, you know, that
Speaker:I'm a big fan of Organa.
Speaker:FI's.
Speaker:Uh, chocolate gold, which is for the evening time, which is amazing as well
Speaker:and great for your, uh, immune system.
Speaker:So definitely take that as well.
Speaker:But the green juice is packed with some really powerful herbs.
Speaker:And I've actually been doing a little something here recently to really bolster
Speaker:the vitamin C content, which is by adding a little bit of camu camu powder.
Speaker:So common comma powder is a very, very vitamin C rich food.
Speaker:I believe it's actually the most vitamin C rich food that we know of.
Speaker:And obviously when we find a food that is high in a vitamin, it is better and
Speaker:more bioavailable for our bodies as opposed to taking it in a supplement form.
Speaker:So that is why I always try to use a whole food when I'm
Speaker:trying to get my nutrients in.
Speaker:So what I've been doing is.
Speaker:I'll add a scoop of the Organifi green juice.
Speaker:And then I throw in a little bit of the common camu blended up and become a combo,
Speaker:adds a nice little tartness to the drink.
Speaker:Which I actually prefer.
Speaker:So if you want to go ahead and get yourself some of this green juice,
Speaker:be sure to head over to Organifi.
Speaker:I have them linked in the show notes and you get a 20% discount code just
Speaker:for being a listener to the show.
Speaker:That is my gift to all of you.
Speaker:Obviously I tried to provide you guys with little.
Speaker:You know, tips and tricks as well as discounts where I can get them.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:Uh, definitely head over to Organifi.
Speaker:If I get yourself some goodies and bolster that immune system for the changing of the
Speaker:seasons now to jump into today's episode.
Speaker:When it comes to.
Speaker:Social media or even really technology for that matter.
Speaker:We can ask the question, is this good?
Speaker:Or is it bad?
Speaker:Well, inherently, nothing is necessarily good or bad in this world, but
Speaker:rather it's the way that we use it.
Speaker:That really makes it so right.
Speaker:So a few examples of this would be like a knife, take a chef's knife, right?
Speaker:That knife is the chef's best friend.
Speaker:It can help them to prepare amazing dishes with ease.
Speaker:They can use skill and precision to really whip up an excellent
Speaker:meal and really, really quick.
Speaker:Uh, time.
Speaker:Uh, or you could also use that same knife to take a person's life, right.
Speaker:There are, you know, it's really, the knife itself is not bad.
Speaker:It's rather the way in which we're using it.
Speaker:Even something as amazing as water, for example, which obviously is
Speaker:necessary for all life here on earth.
Speaker:It waters our plants.
Speaker:Nourishes.
Speaker:Our bodies provides a way of cooling down on a hot summer day.
Speaker:But that same water.
Speaker:And also be used to drown a person, sink a ship, and even destroy a house.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:So as you can see, really anything can be used for either a good or a bad manner,
Speaker:which is going to bring us to the tool of social media or even technology.
Speaker:So if we decide to use social media to compare ourselves to others, whether it's
Speaker:in terms of money, looks, experiences,
Speaker:Then obviously we're going to find ourselves using social media, improperly.
Speaker:However, if you use social media to follow people who are motivating you, sharing
Speaker:their scientific studies with you or helping you to be a better person overall.
Speaker:Then you are using social media correctly.
Speaker:AKA go follow elemental, Evan on Instagram.
Speaker:Seamless plug there, but no, seriously, I tried to spread as much good as I can.
Speaker:So definitely go give me a fall if you aren't already, but, uh, back to the show.
Speaker:The problem here is that social media.
Speaker:Is made to be addicting.
Speaker:It is literally designed to spike your dopamine.
Speaker:For those of you who use Tik TOK, have you ever noticed that when you open up
Speaker:Tik TOK, the first thing they do is they show you a video from your, for you page.
Speaker:It is designed to immediately grab your attention and get you stuck in this.
Speaker:You know, scroll and scroll and scroll momentum and just
Speaker:constantly consuming these videos.
Speaker:So they're literally designed to spike your dopamine.
Speaker:They're also designed to trigger you.
Speaker:They are designed to, uh, you know, have you associate yourself with things that
Speaker:fit your perspective and your agenda.
Speaker:And this is a really big problem because we as human beings.
Speaker:Are, you know, really bad with addictions, we get addicted to things.
Speaker:We create habits around things and, uh, you know, with something that's
Speaker:literally designed to spike our dopamine, it's going to be very hard
Speaker:for us to use social media properly.
Speaker:Therefore to ensure that we are.
Speaker:You know, using social media properly.
Speaker:I truly believe that we actually need to set boundaries.
Speaker:So just as with anything, the boundaries can keep you from having a healthy
Speaker:relationship with something, to having a poor relationship with something.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:If we take alcohol, for example.
Speaker:Naturally, we tend to have some rules around alcohol and its consumption, right?
Speaker:Like typically you only drink later in the day.
Speaker:Um, obviously there are some people who do day drinking, but typically it is a.
Speaker:Action or event that we do later in the day, we usually do
Speaker:it in a social setting, right?
Speaker:It's not usually something we just do alone.
Speaker:We do it in a social setting and we also tend to consume alcohol with food.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:So these are kind of rules that we have designed for alcohol
Speaker:that really keep us from.
Speaker:Being, I guess, you know, addicted or having a bad relationship with it.
Speaker:If we stick to these rules, we are making it so that we don't start drinking
Speaker:during the day and allowing it to start effecting our work and our livelihoods.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:So when it comes to social media, I like to follow a few simple rules.
Speaker:One thing is I like to follow more accounts that add value to my life.
Speaker:So this can be accounts that show me things that make me happy.
Speaker:I literally follow accounts that just have good news on them.
Speaker:Uh, it can also be accounts that teach you new things.
Speaker:I personally follow, uh, you know, hobbies that I'm into.
Speaker:Um, things that, you know, teach me maybe foraging or things about health.
Speaker:Uh, generally anything that's going to expand.
Speaker:My knowledge is going to be a good account to follow.
Speaker:So I would highly recommend that.
Speaker:And yeah, like I had mentioned as well, the hobbies as well are really important.
Speaker:If you have some hobbies like hiking or camping or, um, you
Speaker:know, crafts and whatever, it may be like follow those accounts.
Speaker:Uh, they're really, really awesome.
Speaker:And it can inspire you to do more things outside of social media.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Then the other.
Speaker:Uh, kind of boundary, I would say is to not follow accounts that
Speaker:make you feel angry afterwards.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:If you are on Instagram and you are getting triggered and angry
Speaker:about something, it's probably not the right account to be following.
Speaker:Uh, you know, if there's an account that makes you feel less than, uh, you know,
Speaker:whatever, it may be less than in looks less than in money or whatever, it may be
Speaker:also not a good account to be following.
Speaker:Uh, that kind of also lines up with a account that makes you compare
Speaker:yourself to people or to that person.
Speaker:If you find yourself doing that, typically not a good idea.
Speaker:Uh, I definitely don't like to follow accounts that spread anger,
Speaker:spread lies, spread gossip, or really just anything that is going
Speaker:to be a major time drain for me.
Speaker:If I find myself getting stuck on Instagram or Tik TOK or whatever it may
Speaker:be for a long period of time, then I try to find those accounts and actually
Speaker:unfollow them, or maybe mute them.
Speaker:So after that, after you have established, you know, following people that are
Speaker:really adding value to your life and not following people that are not.
Speaker:Then you can go ahead and set another limit on the time that
Speaker:you are spending on the account.
Speaker:So just as I explained that there are some accounts that really
Speaker:are just a time suck for me.
Speaker:I really don't like spending more than an hour to an hour and a half
Speaker:per day on social media cumulative.
Speaker:And yes, there are days where I am working and, you know, trying to make posts for
Speaker:these different social media platforms.
Speaker:So maybe I do exceed my time on there, but in terms of
Speaker:consuming content, I definitely.
Speaker:Definitely do not exp uh, go over.
Speaker:One to one and a half hours that is really my cutoff limit.
Speaker:And if you find yourself going over that, then I recommend that
Speaker:you set some limits on your phone.
Speaker:I know that they have the capability of making it so you can only allow
Speaker:yourself to be on there for, you know, an hour to an hour and a half.
Speaker:So I would highly recommend that.
Speaker:Now, lastly is, do not say anything on social media platforms that
Speaker:you wouldn't say in person.
Speaker:So I'm sure you've probably heard this before, but social media,
Speaker:while it can be a great way to connect with people and find people
Speaker:who, like I said, it inspire you.
Speaker:Um, Can make you feel great and find people, uh, who are, you know,
Speaker:doing different things than you.
Speaker:Like, that's all great.
Speaker:However, I try to do my best to only share comments with people on
Speaker:social media to encourage them right.
Speaker:And to make them feel good about themselves and themselves, or to
Speaker:spread knowledge that I might have.
Speaker:Because it is very easy for us to be misinterpreted through comments,
Speaker:or even for us to say things that we wouldn't normally say, because that
Speaker:person is not directly in front of us.
Speaker:Just remember.
Speaker:You never know what other people are going through personally in their lives.
Speaker:And that one little comment, you know, even if it was meant to be mean or not.
Speaker:Can really make a huge impact on that person and make them transfer
Speaker:that anger to the people around them.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Which is really just creating this negative ripple in the world.
Speaker:And, you know, it's all just because we decided that we were going to talk some
Speaker:smack on a comment for no reason, right.
Speaker:And now we just created this negative rip on the world.
Speaker:Whereas we could create so many positive ripples in our community,
Speaker:in other communities, through social media, just by spreading positivity
Speaker:and being kinder to each other.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:Truly, truly, if there is something that you would not say to that
Speaker:person to their face, Okay.
Speaker:And I mean, really like truthfully, you wouldn't.
Speaker:It better be something that you would be comfortable saying to their face.
Speaker:Then I would say don't say it at all on there, because as we all know,
Speaker:when we are confronted with someone.
Speaker:And actually having to physically look at them and say something, it
Speaker:is very different than being hidden behind a keyboard and typing away.
Speaker:So definitely don't do that.
Speaker:And also it's just.
Speaker:A good practice to try to spread positivity to, you know, the
Speaker:world and the community around us.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:Those are going to be my biggest tips on social media and kind of navigating
Speaker:them and making sure that we are.
Speaker:You know, using them properly using them like a, the tool that they were
Speaker:meant to be, uh, you know, or at least the way we should be using it.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Maybe it wasn't intended to be this kind of a tool, but I think we can
Speaker:use technology and social media as a really powerful tool for a good.
Speaker:As opposed to bad, you know, and, and really just a time drain and a way
Speaker:of comparing ourselves and feeling less than, and creating anxiety and
Speaker:depression and all of these other things.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:Uh, definitely go ahead and follow these, these few tips on social media.
Speaker:Um, I know it's a difficult thing sometimes.
